Big changes are coming to how Western Australians get their driver’s licence. On 26 April 2026, the WA Government announced a landmark overhaul of the Graduated Licensing System (GLS) — the biggest change to learner driver rules in years. Here’s what every learner driver and parent in Perth needs to know.
What’s changing for learner drivers in WA?
Following feedback from more than 7,700 Western Australians, the new rules include:
- Minimum learner period increasing from 6 months to 12 months
- Minimum provisional period increasing from 2 years to 3 years (one year on P1, two years on P2)
- Minimum supervised driving hours jumping from 50 to 80 hours, with night-time hours doubling from 5 to 10
- A new online theory and hazard perception test option in addition to the in-centre test
- A complete ban on mobile phone use for learner and provisional drivers (hands-free navigation and audio only, set up before driving)
- Zero blood-alcohol limit for anyone supervising a learner driver
What does this mean if you’re learning to drive in Perth?
The message is clear: more practice, more experience, safer drivers. With 80 supervised hours now required, learners need to plan ahead and start earlier. Professional driving lessons are the fastest way to build the skills — and the logbook hours — you need. A structured lesson with a qualified instructor teaches you correct habits from day one, so every hour of private practice with mum or dad builds on solid foundations instead of reinforcing mistakes.
Why start with a professional driving instructor?
At DriveSolo Driving School, we’ve helped learners across Perth — from Kelmscott to Rockingham, Mandurah to Success — pass their Practical Driving Assessment, many on the first attempt. Our structured driving lessons focus on real skills: hazard perception, safe decision-making, and calm, confident car control. That’s exactly what the new WA licensing system is designed to encourage.
Whether you’re just getting your L-plates or preparing for your PDA, starting with professional lessons means you’ll meet the new requirements sooner and become a safer driver for life.
